Kindness, a key to team success

I read lots of articles about kindness in the workplace in an attempt to bolster my own kindness in the workplace theory, which is, kindness is a key to team success.

Most of the articles were more about manners. Most were incomplete, in my opinion. However, there was one that seemed to get it, get why and how kindness makes the difference.

Having been on several staff teams I can tell you that kindness does make the difference, and it especially needs to come down from the top. Kindness is a valued and intentional quality in daily work life on those successful staff teams. It’s how they operate. And, kindness needs to be treasured as a valued benefit, by those on the team.

Speaking from the point of ministry, a kind staff care about each other. They care how individuals are in their work and their relationships–and are sensitive to where assistance might help the project at hand. They care about making plans that compliment and enhance. They care that their team members have what they need to do their job. Kind staff take care of resources, and share them willingly. They use their best manners all the time. Kindness is in the details, in the awareness and support of the details. It is in the communication, in building each other up, in encouraging, and in praying for each other, and together.

Kind fellow team members make it a delight to go to work. In a supportive environment, where gossip and back biting are nixed in favor of kindness, why wouldn’t staff want to build up, excel, and glorify? I know as an administrator it took little to be encouraging, be on time, manage efficiently, make sure people had what they needed to do their jobs, and the rewards were an outstanding staff family that picked up where each other left off, and looked out for each other. Those habits made hardship easier to overcome and no problem was big because there was a team to take it on.

As I look back on my work experiences, it is the kindness in the hearts and spirits of the members of a great team I miss most. I appreciate it now, and I am sure I could have appreciated it more then. Learn with me from standing here, looking back.

  1. Robin, I think we all have taken kindness for granted at some point and didn't realize it until it wasn't a part of our lives any longer. This is a great post (and reminder)… thank you.Great song too!

    Good points about kindness in the workplace. I never thought about it before in terms of productivity, but it makes a lot of sense. I DO work harder for people who are kind.

    I think one of the kindest things one can do, is do their job so well it makes it seamless for others to do theirs. I've been thinking about kindness as a reputation. The San Antonio Spurs come to mind. They are kind to each other and to their community. And, kind and humble Olympic atheletes are just a joy, aren't they? Thanks for your comments all.
